Comparing different ulcer measurement techniques: a pilot study

چکیده
The aim of this pilot study was to compare interrater and intrarater reliability and to provide analysis of difference of common measurement tools used in podiatry. The tools used to measure the surface area in this study were ruler, tracings and photographic methods. Ten volunteers participated in the study. The surface area for the tracing was determined by counting the squares on graph paper and using a computerised program called UTHSCSA Image Tool program (version 2) 1. The surface area for the two cameras was determined by using the UTHSCSA Image Tool program and the length and width measurements were calculated for the ruler method. The one way ANOVA intraclass correlation coefficient ICC(1,1) indicated good reliability for both podiatrists with an ICC(1,1) >0.8. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare tracing, counting of squares from tracing, ruler, digital camera and SLR camera. The p value for ruler measurements were statistically significant when compared to the other methods, while the comparison of the other methods was more varied. In addition, the ruler method had values that were consistently larger than all other methods. It was concluded that this study was unable to provide one statistically significant reliable measurement tool, therefore further investigations were required to strive for a gold standard in measurement techniques. A novel method of comparing the healing properties of two hydrogels in chronic leg ulcers.
Skin ulcers on the legs have a chronic, relapsing course and are often a significant management challenge. Novel methods of measuring and comparing the effects of different treatments can be of assistance in addressing this situation. A clinical pilot study using original methods was undertaken to compare the healing properties of the alginate gel Flaminal (test) and the hydrocolloid gel Intras...
متن کاملA pilot study comparing superficial wound swab, deep tissue biopsy and fine needle aspiration biopsy in identifying infecting organisms in foot ulcers due to diabetes
Background Current clinical practice widely regards deep tissue biopsy as the gold standard for identification of wound bacterial bio-burden. This study aims to establish whether fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is as accurate as deep tissue biopsy and therefore offers a more accurate, cheaper and suitable alternative to routinely used superficial swab in diabetic wounds of varying depth an...

Innovative approaches to the prevention and treatment of foot wounds in persons with diabetes mellitus are needed and preliminary research suggests that exercise therapy may increase joint mobility and blood flow. A 12-week, prospective, quasi-experimental pilot study was conducted to evaluate the potential influence of nonweight-bearing ankle exercises, and adherence to same, on the size of n...

Measurement of skin ulcer area is essential for accurate assessment of the efficacy of different therapeutic strategies. Currently, measurement options involve subjective evaluation of ulcer borders. We quantified ulcer surface area in twelve sickle cell anemia patients by using an infrared (IR) camera and compared measurements to those obtained with standard, manual techniques that utilize vis...
